Home / BMS Slideshow / STEM Students Dissect Pig Heart

Seventh graders in STEM have completed a study of the circulatory system and how the heart functions. They have designed and built a circulatory system, watched a valve replacement surgery video, and are now removing the mitral valve from a pig’s heart. The hearts are donated for science use after the pigs are used by the restaurant industry. Through this dissection, students are prepared for conversations with cardiologists and consider careers in bio-technology, medicine and bio-engineering.
