Students at Bethel Middle School are making a direct global connection while studying Earth’s hydrosphere this week. While learning about water quality here in Haywood County, they also have a personal link to the importance of freshwater in Uganda. The mother of one of our own BMS 8th graders is currently in Africa working with the non-profit Marking Progress to assist with a small school, drill wells for communities, and create sustainable chicken and pig farms to help those communities be self-sustaining. Current 8th graders had a visit from Jennifer and Tom of Marking Progress last year, and this year they are following along via internet updates and look forward to another visit when they return later this year. Some of our 8th grade students and staff chipped in to sponsor 5 pigs that will support the effort in Uganda!
